The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Lands and Agriculture has endorsed the Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (ARDA) wheat production model after field visits in Mashonaland Central, with members now preparing to lobby for increased State funding.

Mutoko South legislator Isaac Tasikani, who is part of the touring committee, said the wheat crop on about 200 hectares under irrigation showed what could be achieved when farmers received comprehensive support. “We have been impressed by the wheat crop. What stands out most is the comprehensive support that ARDA has provided to make this project a success,” he said.

The committee is assessing wheat and maize yields against production targets, evaluating ARDA’s contribution to the Strategic Grain Reserve, and examining measures to improve productivity. Tasikani said the committee would recommend more Government support when it returns to Parliament, with a particular focus on bringing young farmers into the model.

“If replicated across the country, such partnerships would strengthen Zimbabwe’s Strategic Grain Reserve, boost foreign currency earnings through agricultural exports and create employment opportunities, especially for young people,” he added.

ARDA Chief Executive Officer Tinotenda Mhiko outlined plans to expand irrigation to 25,000 hectares across ARDA estates by 2030, saying this would improve climate resilience and ensure consistent production of strategic crops such as wheat and maize.

Operations Director for Commercial Production Shingirai Jenah said the model brought together large-scale farmers through joint ventures, including members of the Strategic Grain Reserve 200+ Club, an association of farmers with at least 200 hectares of arable land.

The committee is continuing nationwide inspections as Zimbabwe pushes to strengthen food security and build a climate-resilient agricultural sector.
