A Harare court has refused to release Hazel Silibaziso Mafu, founder of Hezy Motors Logistics, on bail as she faces fraud charges tied to a vehicle import scheme that allegedly cost clients close to US$1 million.

Regional magistrate Jesse Kufa ruled on Monday that Mafu’s situation could not be compared to that of her co-accused, who have already been granted bail. The magistrate noted that Mafu had previously evaded authorities and held a leadership position in the company, making her flight risk too high.

Prosecutors say between 2022 and 2026, Mafu advertised vehicle import services through social media and other platforms, promising competitive prices and timely delivery. Instead, 79 complainants reportedly paid deposits or full amounts but never received their vehicles. Total losses are estimated at US$624,958.96 and ZiG1,275,878.35, with no recoveries so far.

Mafu remains in custody ahead of trial as the court continues to examine the case.
